General advice from Cats Protection and RSPCA Cats.org.uk/straycat https://www.battersea.org.uk/pet-advice/lost-and-found-cat-advice/found Please wear plastic gloves, spraying gloves each time you touch anything, when opening gates, knocking on doors etc - Knock on doors and ask if anyone knows him/her. Put a paper collar on him/her, if safe to do so. With your contact details on it, and if no owner found within 36 hours then get the cat checked for a microchip, either free at a vet, or local rescues, who could come and scan for a microchip. If there is no chip then put up posters (but do not include a photo of the cat as it could be in danger). Just brief description and contact number. If an owner comes forward then ask them for proof of ownership and any distinguishing features. Before you hand cat over. If the cat is poorly or obviously distressed then ring up nearby vet to ask for advice on treatment, or go through your local animal rescue charity. Also please feed him/her and provide water. If you knock on doors, don’t show photos of the cat, and only brief description, let the potential owner describe their cat to you to keep the cat out of danger.
